Gentle Giants Need our Help

·       According to a news release from Mayor William Peduto’s office, the city lost 6.2% of its tree canopy between 2010 and 2015, reducing leafy coverage of the urban landscape to approximately 36%.

·       Between 2010 and 2015, Allegheny County lost over 11,000 acres of tree canopy – 1,000 acres alone in the City of Pittsburgh.

·       On average, we lose 86 trees per day to disease, development, and tree removal.

·       The useful life of a park tree is 60 to 80 years if they are well cared for.

·       Devastating insects like the Spotted Lanternfly and fungal diseases such as oak wilt threaten more than 60% of our native tree population.

·       American cities lose an average 36 million trees each year due to factors such as disease, age, and development, which results in economic losses up to $786 million annually.

And We Need Them

·       According to the U.S. Forest Service, 100 trees will remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide, 430 pounds of other air pollutants, and catch about 139,000 gallons of rainwater every year!

·       You can reduce stress and anxiety by spending 20 minutes a week outdoors with trees.

·       Research shows that people who live in areas with more trees report lower rates of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses.

·       A shade tree can help cool your home or office building by as much as 20 degrees in the summertime.
